HEIC to JPG or PNG: How to Open iPhone Photos on Windows, Android, and in a CMS

HEIC is efficient on iPhone, but it often becomes a problem when a photo has to work in Windows folders, Android apps, older editors, email, or a CMS upload panel.

When JPG is the best choice

Convert HEIC to JPG when compatibility matters more than transparency or lossless archiving. JPG opens almost everywhere: Windows Photos, Android galleries, email clients, product panels, blog editors, and social media uploaders.

For most iPhone photos, JPG is the safest export for clients, team members, CMS editors, and marketplaces. Use quality around 80-90 when you want a good balance between a smaller file and a natural photo look.

When PNG makes sense

PNG is useful when the image contains text, screenshots, UI details, or graphics that should stay sharp after conversion. It is usually larger than JPG for regular photos, but it avoids additional lossy compression.

If you are preparing instructions, app screenshots, or support documentation from an iPhone image, HEIC to PNG can keep edges cleaner than JPG.

CMS and marketing workflow

Before uploading to WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, or a custom CMS, rename the file descriptively, convert HEIC to JPG or WebP, and compress the final export if the page is public. Search engines do not rank a product image because it is HEIC; they reward pages that load fast and have useful alt text.

A practical filename is better than a camera export such as IMG_4832. Use names like oak-table-natural-light.jpg or iphone-case-blue-back.jpg, then add alt text that describes the image naturally.

  • Photos for CMS: HEIC to JPG, then optionally JPG to WebP
  • Screenshots and UI details: HEIC to PNG
  • Product images: consistent size, clean filename, descriptive alt text

Common mistakes

Do not repeatedly export JPG to JPG while editing, because every lossy save can reduce quality. Keep the original HEIC separately and create a fresh JPG or PNG when you need a new version.

Do not upload huge original iPhone photos directly into a blog post if the page only displays a small image. Resize or convert first, especially for mobile users and Core Web Vitals.
