WebP or AVIF for an Online Store: Which Format Should You Choose for Products?
For online stores, image format is not a design detail. It affects page speed, product discovery, mobile conversion, and how quickly users can compare items.
The practical recommendation
Use WebP as the default production format for most product photos. It gives strong compression, broad browser support, transparency support, and predictable behavior in ecommerce stacks.
Use AVIF for high-traffic pages, large hero images, and image-heavy categories after visual testing. AVIF can be smaller than WebP, but it should be checked carefully for product color, fine texture, and encode time.
- Default product export: WebP
- Aggressive speed optimization: AVIF
- Fallback for feeds or old systems: JPG
Where WebP wins
WebP is the safer everyday choice when your team uploads products often and needs a workflow that does not surprise CMS editors. It works well for product grids, thumbnails, blog images, banners, and transparent PNG replacements.
If you sell through integrations, marketplaces, or feeds, keep a JPG master export ready as a fallback. Many store systems accept WebP now, but not every external channel handles it the same way.
Where AVIF is worth testing
AVIF is strongest when the same image is downloaded thousands of times and every kilobyte matters. That usually means home page visuals, category banners, editorial images, and product photos above the fold.
Test AVIF with real products, not only sample photos. Fabric texture, jewelry shine, skin tones, labels, and small packaging text can reveal artifacts that are easy to miss in a quick preview.
SEO and conversion checklist
Choose one consistent naming pattern, export images at the actual display sizes you need, add alt text that helps users understand the product, and avoid uploading a 4000 px image into a 400 px card.
A good ecommerce workflow keeps originals in storage, publishes WebP by default, tests AVIF on important pages, and monitors LCP after deployment.
- Keep originals outside the CMS
- Use WebP as default
- Test AVIF before broad rollout
- Measure LCP on category and product pages
